"I do not sing because I'm happy; I'm happy because I sing."
~ William James

Under New Direction

A native of Atlanta, Deborah A.Jones earned her Bachelor of Music Degree from Georgia State University where she studied voice with Betty Turner Boone, was the recipient of the Harris M. Taft Memorial Music Scholarship, was selected to sing with the Johnny Mercer ensemble and madrigal singers, participated in opera workshop with Peter Harrower, and student taught at Forest Park High School with Marion Williams, former director of The Henry Singers.

Being married with child upon graduation from GSU, Ms. Jones elected to focus on raising a family rather than pursuing a musical career, and she became the volunteer children’s choir director at Eastside Baptist Church in Riverdale, where she later also served as a Preschool Teacher and interim Choir Director.   Although working full-time in various administrative support roles, Ms. Jones was hired as the Alto Soloist at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Atlanta and was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw for a brief period until the birth of her third child in 1990.  Ms. Jones has served as Choir Director at Griffith Memorial Baptist Church (n/k/a Faith Baptist Church) in Stockbridge and Brooks United Methodist Church in Brooks.  Ms. Jones also taught Middle School Chorus in the Clayton County School System for a total of 5+ years, and served briefly as the Education Assistant at Spivey Hall.  Additionally, Ms. Jones has been a member of Excelsior community chorus and The Henry Singers, both under the direction of Marion Williams, for many years and served as his backup whenever needed.

Ms. Jones is no stranger to the Henry Arts Alliance, as she is active with the Henry Players having performed in several shows, includingSinging in the Rain (Dora Bailey), Civil War (Chorus), Jekyll & Hyde (Chorus), Beauty and the Beast (Madame de la Grande Bouche—the  enchanted wardrobe), and Sound of Music (Baroness Elsa Schraeder).   Ms. Jones has also served as Music Director with the Henry Players for Secret Garden, Treasure Island, Sweeney Todd, and, most recently, A Tale of Cinderella.

Currently Ms. Jones mostly enjoys being a grandmamma and dabbling in music composition, but she is a Legal Assistant with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia in the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office.  She also sings with theJonesboro United Methodist Church Choir under the direction of Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, who is also the Director of Opera Studies at Clayton State University, and Ms. Jones serves as a soloist and backup conductor for Dr. Zeller as well.

Sad to see Marion Williams relinquish the podium, and with the utmost admiration and respect for his passion for music, love and compassion for the multitudes of people he has touched throughout his many years of service to the community, and mastery of his craft, Ms. Jones considers it both an honor and privilege to step in for him to carry on the vision began by the late Dr. Edward Bridges, who “believed that the Arts should be available to every citizen of Henry County” (Henry County Tax Commissioner 2012 Annual Report).

Ms. Jones and members of The Henry Singers would love to see you either in the choir or in the audience this season, and we thank you for your generous support!
